The Glòria Soler Foundation, in collaboration with the Obra Social of Sant Joan de Déu and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, has contributed since 2015 to the consolidation of the Paediatric Palliative Care Unit at the hospital, as well as the PRINCEP programme.
This initiative is focused on children and young people, from birth to 18 years old, who suffer from serious incurable illnesses or complex chronicities that constitute a threat or limitation to their lives. The programme helps to improve the quality of their lives and of their families, offering total attention adapted to their specific circumstances both at the hospital and at home, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the aim of dedicating resources for this purpose over the entire duration of the illness in question.
The collaboration of the Glòria Soler Foundation has made it possible to raise the profile of the Unit, expanding the team and with it the number of patients being treated, as well as improving the quality of the attention received by patients and families.
Directed by Doctor Sergi Navarro, this project is a reference point in the health care network. Through the Foundation’s support, the project has become more widely known. Related training has been offered to other professionals and health centres, with initiatives such as the creation of the Spanish Society for Paediatric Palliative Care, with representation from more than 10 Spanish hospitals, as well as efforts to create international associations. The results have also been published in scientific journals, and the Unit has participated actively in professional conferences and meetings, while spreading information on the knowledge and resources acquired through various online channels.
