The Paediatric Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, a project funded by the Glòria Soler Foundation, is a benchmark in the care network, and has made a very significant contribution to its creation in Catalonia.

The project is led by Dr. Sergi Navarro, Coordinator of the Comprehensive Care Service for Children with Serious Chronic Illness, High Complexity Condition and Palliative Needs of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and President of the Spanish Society of Paediatric Palliative Care.

One of the objectives of the Paediatric Palliative Care Unit has been to achieve recognition as a specialty in paediatrics and to be assumed by the public health system in Catalonia in order to reach all those families and children who need it.

In recent years, the Paediatric Palliative Care Unit has provided evidence, created protocols, trained professionals and other hospitals, and advised the Catalan Health Service, which has facilitated the creation of this public health policy.

In Catalonia, there are an estimated 1,500 children and young people in need of paediatric palliative care. With the creation of the network, there will be 3 levels of care with multidisciplinary teams composed by professionals in medicine, nursing, psychology and social work with specialized training in paediatrics and specific in palliative care.

The first phase of operation begins this October, in order to implement and establish the model over a period of three years.
